Welcome to an update of the Nebraska Birdline, sponsored by the Audubon
Society of Omaha, for Friday, August 11th.
In western Nebraska in Keith County on the 7th, a 1st alternate PACIFIC
LOON, a RED-BREASTED MERGANSER and 6 CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPURS were seen
at Lake McConaughy. The following shorebirds were also seen at Lake
McConaughy/Lake Ogallala on the 7th: 8 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, a
SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, 19 PIPING PLOVERS, 22 AMERICAN AVOCETS, 4 GREATER
YELLOWLEGS, 18 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 2 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS, a WILLET, 5
UPLAND SANDPIPERS, 30 LONG-BILLED CURLEWS, 10 MARBLED GODWITS, 5
SANDERLINGS, 28 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, 13 LEAST SANDPIPERS, 2,993
BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS, 28 STILT SANDPIPERS, 4 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS, 13
LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS, 83 WILSON'S PHALAROPES and 2 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES.
On the 6th an OSPREY, an adult and a juvenile PEREGRINE FALCON, a PRAIRIE
FALCON, a BLACK-NECKED STILT, a CASPIAN TERN and a CAROLINA WREN were seen
at Lake McConaughy. On the 6th, 3 adult MISSISSIPPI KITES were seen in
Ogallala, and on the 8th, a MISSISSIPPI KITE was seen on the east side of
Ogallala.
In Kimball County on the 6th, a RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD was seen in Kimball.
Also on the 6th, 6 SAGE THRASHERS and 13 NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRDS were found
in southwest Kimball County. In Scotts Bluff County on the 2nd at
Wildcat Hills Nature Center, LAZULI BUNTINGS and RED CROSSBILLS were found.
At Scottsbluff National Monument on the 2nd, a ROCK WREN was seen. In
Sioux County on the 4th and 5th, a SHARP-TAILED GROUSE, 3 LEWIS'S
WOODPECKERS, 2 SAY'S PHOEBES, a YELLOW- BREASTED CHAT, 4 BLACK-HEADED
GROSBEAKS, 2 LAZULI BUNTINGS and 2 BULLOCK'S ORIOLES were found.
In eastern Nebraska in the eastern Rainwater Basin on the 3rd and the 5th
the following species were seen: 12 GREAT EGRETS, 3 GREATER YELLOWLEGS,
22 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 10 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, 75 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS
and 12 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS.
In Lancaster County on the 9th, 3 GREAT EGRETS were seen at Spring Creek
Prairie south of Denton. Also on the 9th at Branched Oak Lake, 2 STILT
SANDPIPERS, a PECTORAL SANDPIPER, 9 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, a BAIRD'S
SANDPIPER, a DOWITCHER sp and a RING-BILLED GULL were found.
In central Nebraska in Buffalo County on the 5th, 2 SANDHILL CRANES, 2
LEAST TERNS and a SEDGE WREN were seen at Rowe Sanctuary. On the 4th, 3
UPLAND SANDPIPERS were seen flying over the UNK campus in Kearney.
In Harlan County on the 6th, 93 GREAT EGRETS, 3 SNOWY EGRETS, 6 species
of shorebirds and 5 CASPIAN TERNS were seen at Harlan Reservoir. On the
5th, an EARED GREBE and 2 WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were also seen at Harlan
Reservoir.
