SEWARD-BRANCHED OAK LAKE: DECEMBER 14
The Seward-Branched Oak Lake CBC will be held Sunday, December 14 (the
first official day allowed for the count). We always need help.
We need
help covering Branched Oak Lake (3-4 parties) Twin Lakes (2 parties),
the
west end of Pawnee Lake, Meadowlark Lake as well as several WMAs that
are
usually productive. Unless previously assigned a territory, we
will meet at
the marina on the north side of Branched Oak Lake at 7 AM to divide
up
territories. Please email me or call if you can help. It greatly
helps to
know ahead of time so that I can assign territories. We do not
compare to
the Lake McConaughy CBC, but our species counts for the last 5 years
have
been good.
2002 - 69 species
2001 - 73 species
2000 - 64 species
1999 - 84 species
1998 - 88 species
If the cold weather holds off and with an early count day, it could
be a
good year. I already have a hermit thrush staked out. With
a little luck
and a lot of help we can reach the 80s again. Please come and
help. I try
to give those who come and help the best sites.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Seward-Branched Oak Lake CBC was held Sunday, December 14.
We
ended up with 17,486 total birds with 64 species seen (not counting
the
chukar). Interesting findings include the following:
6 bald eagles - high number in 11-year history of count
7 sharp-shinned hawks - high number in 11-year history of count
35 red-tailed hawks - 2nd lowest in 11-year history of count; only
the first
year with few observers was lower
3 merlins - 2nd highest number in 11-year history of count
42 ring-neck pheasant - 2nd highest number in 11-year history of count;
the
pheasant habitat alteration program at BOL
is working (31 of total seen
at BOL) probably much to the detriment of other
birds
no herring gulls - first time not seen during count or count week
69 red-bellied woodpeckers - high number in 11-year history of count
(previous high was 43; 10 year average was
33.5
401 American crows - 2nd lowest in 11-year history of count; only the
first
year with few observers was lower; the ten
year average was 801; maybe
they have not recovered from WNV
28 black-capped chickadees - low number in 11-year history of count
(previous low was 122; 10 year average was
169.4); Where did they go?
6148 American robins - high number in 11-year history of count (previous
high was 2387; 10 year average was 735)
2 Hermit thrushes - third time on count; first time more than one was
seen;
111 purple finches - high number in 11-year history of count (previous
high
was 37; 10 year average - 18.7
Other notable sightings
1 Carolina wren
2 winter wrens

Dear all,
First, a big thanks to all the participants of the count, we had 10 people who came out and helped this year - it certainly makes it easier to cover the Circle when you have help.
Individual numbers were about average when compared to the previous 3 counts. Four new species for the count were found - Ferruginous Hawk, Northern Bobwhite, Eurasian Collared-Dove, and Marsh Wren. All but one pond was frozen over, but the White River was open. We were unable to find any waterfowl. Conversely, the Wild Turkey numbers were an all time high. Black-capped Chickadee numbers, while high for the last four years, may just reflect the number of counters and the mild weather on the day of the count. When compared to the older counts (from 1974 to 1979) the Chickadee numbers are about one third to one half!! Only two Flickers were found and no Robins! Anyone that is interested in a complete Excel spreadsheet of all the Crawford counts, please email me and I can send it to you. Below is the tally for this year's count.

DESOTO/BOYER CHUTE: DECEMBER 20
Greetings all,
The DeSoto/Boyer Chute CBC was held Saturday December 20. The lack
of open water kept the number and species down. Conspicuously absent
were waterfowl and sparrow diversity. A Snipe seen at the Fort Calhoun
water treatment outlet for many years was absent. The count day weather
was good with clear skies, moderate temperature and moderate wind. Our
Chickadee numbers were down only 36% from last year (406). Looking back
to 1987 only 5 years had higher Chickadee counts (1987-1990, 2002).
A surprising number of Hermit Thrush were found (4) setting a new record.
Previously only 1 had been found in both 1993-94. Purple Finches were prodigous
with most counts at the Hitchcock hawkwatch during count week being over
100. The 34 seen on count day was still enough to blow away any previous
high tally (9). The totals presented are tentative. The compiler,
Bob Barry biologist at DeSoto NWR, has the final say but these numbers
are based on the same data.

41st Grand Island Christmas Birdcount
December 20th, 2003
Thanks to all who participated in the 2003 Grand Island Christmas Bird
Count. Your help and expertise is always appreciated. Every
group of
counters seemed to come up with a few species that none of the other
groups
found. When all was said and done, we identified 64 species
and counted
about 29,330 total birds! We had 14 people helping
on the count and an
additional 3 people counting at their feeders. Six people counted
owls in
the evening and wound up with a record 18 Screech Owls and a record
6
Short-eared Owls. A first time species, Long-eared Owl, was identified
at
Cornhusker WMA. Record numbers were set or tied for 9 additional
species
including Ross' Geese (2), American Black Duck (2), Rough-legged Hawks
(29),
Wild Turkey (407), Ring-billed Gulls (3), Eastern Screech-owls (18),
Short-eared Owls (6), European Starlings (15568), and Common Redpolls
(5).
Other noteables included: 2 Prairie Falcons and 10 Field Sparrows at
Cornhusker WMA, an Osprey and 6 Bluebirds at the GI Well Fields, a
Mourning
Dove at Hall County Park, 3 Coots at Pier Park, a Cooper's Hawk near
Phillips, a Grackle at Mormon Island, 6 Pine Siskins at an area feeder,
Great Blue Heron, Snow Geese, White-fronted Geese and 2 Lesser Scaup
at
Amick Acres, a Common Merganser on a sandpit and 2 Golden-crowned Kinglets
at the Crane Trust. To everyone's non-delight, European Starlings (15,568)
were the most common species seen followed by Canada Geese (8165) and
Mallards (2965). The 15 Black-capped Chickadees seen were the
lowest ever
recorded on our counts and House Sparrow numbers were the second lowest.
Native sparrow numbers were way down too. See you all next spring
on the
Hall County count!

This was the 41st Christmas Bird Count conducted in the Grand Island
circle.
The 64 species recorded was at the high midrange for species seen on
past
counts. A total of 120 species have been recorded for this count
circle
with high species totals in the upper 70's. The day was
beautiful with
warm temperatures and sun in the morning giving way to scattered clouds
and
medium winds in the afternoon. Six counters went owling before
the count
and a total of 14 people in 6 parties helped count birds during the
day.
Additionally, 3 people counted birds at their feeders and submitted
their
totals. Record numbers were set for 10 species and one new species,
Long-eared Owl, was added.

SCOTTSBLUFF: DECEMBER 20
Fellow Birders,
I finally have the results of the Scottsbluff CBC. 18 competent
birders and an unusually nice weather day helped us tally the largest number
of species ever--72, which beat last year's record of 70. In addition,
5 Sandhill Cranes were see during the count week. I've been compiling
this count for 25 years or more, and I feel this is the best coverage we
have ever had. We reported 28,166 individuals.
We had 1 new species, a Carolina Wren--a very rare bird in this part of the state. There were 4 species reported for the second time, and 15 species had a new high number.
As to the chickadee discussion--this is the 50th year for the Scottsbluff count, and we have seen chickadees each year. The highest number was 75 in 1990, and the lowest was 8 in 1998. We had 21 this year. We had 7 parties, and only 3 of those reported chickadees. Most of the birds (16) came from one party. In 2002 there were 48, in 2001 there were 24, in 2000 there were 33, and in 1999 there were 25. Most of us that bird here regularly feel like we aren't seeing many chickadees. Without those 16 in one area, we would really have been down in numbers. So interpret the data as you wish.
Local people were also watching Black-billed Magpies which most of us feel are decreased in number. We had 50 this year. Highest number was 148 in 1964 and lowest was 5 in 1976. So maybe we aren't as low as we think.
Red-winged Blackbirds were down to 136 after a high last year of 6525. Construction of a new highway has closed a feedlot that played host to all of those thousands last year.

LAKE MC CONAUGHY: DECEMBER 21
The thirteenth annual Lake
McConaughy Christmas Bird Count was held on Sunday, December 21, 2003.
This year's group of 18 field birders and 13 feeder watchers recorded 67,759
individuals of 105 species of birds. The number of
individuals is a record for this count, and the species total is well above
the average of 88 species and second only to the record of 108 species
seen in 2002. Unusual finds this year included four species that were new
to the count (Black-headed Gull, Little Gull, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker,
and Rock Wren) plus several rare waterbirds and lingering passerines. An
additional four species of birds, marked by a "CW" on the list below, were
recorded during the week of the count (18-24 December), but not on count
day. The high species total was probably the result of a fairly mild fall,
very little ice on any of the water bodies, and excellent weather during
the count. However, a group of feeder watchers, coordinated by Bill Huntley,
reported that numbers of birds at feeders were unusually low this year,
perhaps the result of weather or other food supplies. Noteworthy misses
on this year's count included Sharp-tailed Grouse, Lapland Longspur, and
Pine Siskin.
Participants on this year's
count included Henry Armknecht (Ovid, Colorado), Gordon Brown (Cary, North
Carolina), Bob and Kathy DeLara (Scottsbluff), Stephen J. Dinsmore (Starkville,
Mississippi-Count organizer), Dean and Phyllis Drawbaugh (Scottsbluff),
Peter Frechtel (Denver, Colorado), Robin Harding (Gibbon), Helen Hughsen
(Scottsbluff), Bill Huntley (Ogallala), Clem and Betty Klaphake (Bellevue),
Kay Niyo (Evergreen, Colorado), Lanny Randolph (Gibbon), Tommie Rogers
(Mound City, Missouri), Ross Silcock (Tabor, Iowa), and Mark Urwiller (Kearney).

OMAHA: DECEMBER 27
The Omaha CBC was held on Saturday, December 27 in very delightful weather
for the 38 birders. The birds were somewhat more difficult to
come by. We had
a low-average species count of 60 with a Pileated Woodpecker and a
Franklin's
Gull showing up later in "count week." Total numbers were just
over 9,000.

No new species this year.
We were shut out of one restricted area due to the increased terrorism
alert
and we find that much of our area is continuing to grow with residential
and
commercial buildings decreasing the habitat for birds. Makes
us scour the
little pockets of woods, shrub and water even more closely.
