GRAND ISLAND CBC:  December 18, 2004

Thanks to all who participated in the 2004 Grand Island Christmas Bird Count.  Your expertise, willingness to help and respect for birdlife is always appreciated.  We identified 64 species and counted about 41,898 birds in the final tally!  This year we had 15 people helping on the count and an additional 3 people counting at their feeders.  Four people counted owls in the evening.  Record numbers were set or tied for 13 species including American Pelican (1), Great Blue Herons (5), Ross' Geese (2),  Northern Shovelers (4), Golden Eagle (1), Wild Turkey (484), Killdeer (3), Eurasian Collared-Doves (42), Long-eared Owls (2), European Starlings (33,207), Chipping Sparrows (10), Song Sparrows (27), and Brewer's Blackbirds (3). Noteable sightings by area included: 2 Prairie Falcons and 2 long-eared Owls at Cornhusker WMA, an Osprey, 3 Great Blue Heron, 4 White-fronted Geese, and 2 Ross' Geese at Amick Acres.  3 Killdeer, a Prairie Falcon, 2 Great Blue Heron, a Golden Eagle, 24 Rusty Blackbirds and 3 Brewer's Blackbirds at Morman Island.  A Wilson's Snipe at the GI sewage lagoon. An American Pelican and a Townsend's Solitaire at the Crane Trust.  4 Northern Shovelers on a lake east of the Stuhr.  A Coot, a Herring Gull, 4 Northern Shrike, 42 Eurasian Collared-doves, 3 Common Grackles, 3 Purple Finch, 10 Chipping Sparrows and 25 Song Sparrows along county roads. Also, a Townsend's Solitaire at the G.I. Well Fields.  European Starlings (33,207) were by far the most common species seen followed by Canada Geese (3123) and Mallards (2171).  Native sparrow numbers were way down.  Waterfowl were also way down despite there being so much open water.

This was the 42nd Christmas Bird Count conducted in the Grand Island circle. The 64 species recorded was at the high midrange for species seen on past counts.  A total of 121 species have been recorded for this count circle with high species totals in the upper 70's.   The day was warm with sun in the morning giving way to clouds and gusty winds in the afternoon.  Four counters went owling before the count and a total of 15 people in 7 parties helped count birds during the day.  Additionally, 3 people counted birds at their feeders and submitted their totals.  Record numbers were set or tied for 13 species and no new species were added.

LINCOLN CBC Results - Linda R. Brown, Compiler

December 18, 2004

Twenty-six persons walked the fields and lakeshores of Lincoln's 15 mile
diameter circle, counting every bird they saw for the 105th Audubon
Christmas Bird Count on December 18, 2004.  10,273 individual birds
representing 55 species were counted. Larry Einemann documented two
species, new to the Lincoln list: Marsh Wren and Hermit Thrush.

OMAHA CBC: December 18, 2004

The Omaha CBC, which centers on the Base Lake in Bellevue and extends into
Lake Manawa and down towards Plattsmouth and Glenwood, was held Saturday, December
18th in fairly pleasant conditions.  High was 47 degrees with a breeze and
cloudy.  Most still water was frozen with only small pockets open.

Thirty-five counters tallied 62 species (with 2 more in count week) and
17,661 individual birds.
Most notable were a Trumpeter Swan at Lake Manawas and a No. Mockingbird seen
in that same quadrant.  A Black Duck was also spotted at the MidAmerican
power station in Manawa.  Guess the rest of us were just slacking off.

Highs were recorded for Canada Goose with several Cackling Geese identified
within the flock.  Red-breasted Nuthatches were also in abundance this year.

Missed were Winter Wrens and the Pileated Woodpeckers.

DeSOTO/BOYER CHUTE CBC: December 19, 2004

The 2004 DeSoto/Boyer Chute CBC was held Sunday, December 19th. The count is located in the Missouri River valley between Omaha Ne and Missouri Valley Ia. We had excellent coverage this year with 23 participants in 10 groups. The lake at DeSoto Refuge was largely frozen, keeping down the waterfowl tally. Frigid temperatures with below zero windchills in the morning kept it interesting.

7 species of gulls (best were single Iceland, Glaucous, and Great Black-backed gulls)
1 Short-eared Owl
6 Northern Shrikes
27 Red-breasted Nuthatches (count record)
1 Ruby-crowned Kinglet
140 Townsend's Solitaires (count record)

SEWARD-BRANCHED OAK LAKE CBC:  December 19, 2004

The Seward-Branched Oak Lake CBC final tally is complete.  We tallied 76
species (plus 5 count week species).  Best bird was the pine grosbeak (first
occurrence on count and noteworthy sighting anywhere in Nebraska).  Other
notable sightings were 1 common snipe (second occurrence in 12 years), 7
Eurasian collared doves (first occurrence on count), 10 long-eared owls
(high count), 11 black-capped chickadees (dropped from last year's low of
28; 12-year average including the last two years is 144), 5 Townsend's
solitaires (ties high count), 1 brown thrasher seen in Seward (first
occurrence), 7 Harris sparrows (new low count), 91 red crossbills.  Also
worth noting was a snow goose/greater white-fronted goose hybrid seen at
Twin Lakes.  Not sure what Audubon will do with that bird that was counted.
The total individuals of 6862 was the lowest in 12 years (previous low was
9921 and 12-year average is 22093) while 76 species was the 3rd highest
species total.  The low number of individuals probably reflects low number
of party hours, but that analysis hasn't been done yet.  Merry Christmas to
all and a huge thanks to all those who helped on the Seward-Branched Oak
Lake CBC.

CRAWFORD CBC:  December 20, 2004

Seasons Greetings!

The Crawford CBC was held Monday December 20, 2004.  An intrepid, but small (four of us) group optimistically started out on the count a 8 AM with the remnamts of the nice weather from the week-end.  By 9:30, the wind had picked up and we began to have a horizontal snow!!  Fortunately, the snow only lasted about 40 minutes, but the temperature dropped about 10 degrees and the wind continued to blow and was a factor for the rest of the count.

Assuming, that the Scottsbluff and MacConaughy counts are the same week-end next year, we are considering having the Crawford count on January 1 (a Sunday) so that perhaps we can enlist more help (the calendar is not friendly for counts for at least one more year).

Anyway, below are our results:

BEAVER VALLEY CBC (near Petersburg in Boone Co.):  January 02, 2005

We did a very chilly CBC in Boone Co.  Just 2 of us and 1 feeder watcher.
The temperature varied from 13-34 degrees.  No wind, no snow, partly sunny.
There wasn't much moving at first (cars, people or birds because of the ice!)
We logged 4 miles on foot and 52 miles by car in 8 hours.

We ended up with 31 species and 402 birds total. The Bald Eagle count was
way down - only 5 - but we saw lots of raptors which included a Merlin,
8 Red-tailed hawks and 1 Harlan's Hawk as well as Rough-legged hawks and
a No. Harrier. Several of the highlights of the day were a Golden-crowned
Kinglet, a Loggerhead Shrike, and a Great Horned owl carrying a rabbit.

The Mallard, Blackbird, Crow and Blue Jay counts were way down than from
previous years.  You may wonder about the Loggerhead Shrike but Don got
within 20 ft. of it and it sat there letting him get a very good look at
it.  The eagle count was low compared to other years also.
