Why do I like the Calamus Reservoir? Years ago
Robin and I went every summer to the Niobrara
River to help with a butterfly count. In those days
we considered the Calamus Reservoir to be too
far to go for a day trip. But one time we found
ourselves with a spare hour as we were driving by
the Calamus Reservoir on our way to the count.
We saw fifty different species of birds in one
hour in early July. That is a different species
every minute and ten seconds. We no longer
consider that the Calamus Reservoir is too far for
a day trip. A pair of Bald Eagles nest there.
In spring and fall, there is at least one Osprey
at the Calamus. The Calamus Reservoir is
probably the best place to find Greater
Prairie-Chickens in the State year around.
There are also Sharp-tailed Grouse there.
