Common Crane
This Common Crane was first seen in a flock of Sandhill Cranes in
Buffalo County, Nebraska about one mile south and two east of the
Gibbon I-80 exit by Tammy VerCauteren on March 6, 1999. This photo was
taken by Loren (Bub) Blake in mid-afternoon on the same day only a few
hundred yards from where it was first seen. The bird was seen several
times in the general area until March 28 when it was in a field
just south of Audubon's Rowe Sanctuary. This is only the fifth
reported sighting of a Common Crane in Nebraska. It is common
in China and overlaps the summer range of Sandhill Cranes in Siberia.
