Fall Field Days to be Held in the Lake McConaughy,
Cedar Point and Lake Ogallala Area
September 8 - 10
As most of you know this area of the state is probably
one of the best areas for birding in terms of variety of species. It also
is an area that will often have some unexpected species turn up almost
any time of the year. This should be a fun weekend for all of you NOU members
who want to get out and find some of those migrants that come through in
early September. Our usual fall meeting days were in the middle of October
at Halsey. This year we not only are meeting a
month earlier but also in a very different location.
Steve Dinsmore, who has organized this year's meeting, indicated in an
earlier NeBirds message that there should be some possibilities of seeing
some not so common gulls, lots of shorebirds, and possible strays of more
western species (Townsend's Warbler or Cassin's Vireo as examples).
There is a schedule of the Field Days activities on the back of this page. Be sure to get your registration in to Jan Uttecht as soon as possible. There is lodging at Cedar Point or you can make your own arrangements with local motels or campgrounds. Registration will be in the main building at Cedar Point. To get there from Ogallala drive north on highway 61 to the Kingsley Dam. Before you start over the dam turn right onto a gravel road that takes you up and turns to the left and then down to where you are level with the dam. This first part is the same road you take to the eagle viewing area by the spillway. You will be on a gravel road heading east along the south side of the spillway. You then pass through a gate and travel east for about another mile. There will be signs (NOU) posted for you to follow. You don't want to go across the dam to the campground area. Cedar Point is on the south side of Keystone Lake.
When filling out the registration for lodging at Cedar Point be sure to list the names of people you know who will be staying with you. Three to four people will be staying in each cabin. As you can see from the program, breakfasts are free. If you need a hot eggs and bacon breakfast you will have to arrange that on your own at a local restaurant.
More information will be provided for you when you arrive
for registration.
