We will have an opportunity to bird along the Middle Loup River, in the National Forest, in the
Sandhills, and north to Willow Lake and Valentine NWR.
The administration building has 6 rooms, each accommodating 2 persons. Rooms have private baths and
linens are provided. These will be assigned in the order the reservations are received.
The bunkhouse-type cabins, have shared bathroom facilities. We can usually accommodate couples
privately and singles in men's and women's 'dorm' cabins. Bring your own bedding and towels, or
they are available for $10 per person.
You will find the registration blank with the prices for each facility elsewhere in this newsletter.
Please return registration form to Betty Grenon by September 19. Check in will begin at 4:00 p.m. on
Friday the 26. Dinner will follow at 6:00 p.m. We encourage everyone to stay at the Camp, but for
those who might want other accommodations, there is the Keeney Motel (308-533-2240) in Halsey 2 miles
east or Rodeway Inn (308-645-2284) and Arrow Motel (308-645-2246) in Thedford 15 miles to the west.
There are also good camping facilities in the National Forest.
Vice-president Dave Heidt has been busy lining up an interesting program. Bub Blake will be showing
us what he has been up to with bird photography this last year. Kevin Poague from Audubon Nebraska
will tell us the latest about the Important Bird Areas (IBA) project in Nebraska.
There will be organized field trips to Willow Lake and Valentine NWR. Many birders prefer to 'do
their own thing' around the forest or in the Sandhills.
We will be having a drawing for door prizes, so, if you have some wonderful treasure you can't wait
to get rid of, please bring it along.
We welcome Pam Anderson from Grand Island.
2004 Annual Spring Meeting at Ogallala May 14-16, 2004
Christmas is not that far away!! (Ugh!!!!) Don't forget the NOU online store for books, videos, etc.
The address is http://www.withoutbricks.com/NOUStore.
We extend our sympathies to the family of Dr. Roger Sharpe who died in June. He had served as NOU
president in 1967-68 and again in 1972. Roger taught ornithology and directed the environmental
studies program at UNO for 32 years. He retired in 2000. He contributed much to the field of
ornithology in Nebraska, most recently being a co-author of "Birds of Nebraska" with Ross Silcock
and Joel Jorgensen. His ancestry was Czech and in the early 1990's he was part of a team of scientists
that was assembled to cleanse the polluted land of Czechoslovakia.
Your editor made a serious error in the last newsletter. She forgot to thank retiring president Janis
Paseka for her two great years as NOU president. We look forward to having Janis remaining on the
Executive Committee as the immediate past president. Thanks are also due Betty Allen who is retiring
from the Executive Committee after serving as vice president, president, and past president. A big
thanks to these two gals for their service. Thanks also to Dave Heidt for agreeing to serve as vice
president.
I'm hoping to get this whole newsletter process figured out before too many more issues. Apologies to
Ross Silcock, Mitzi Fox, Mary Lou Pritchard, and anyone else who had mistakes in their information on
the last page of the last newsletter. I welcome any other corrections that need to be made.
Loren and Babs Padelford have retired from 'manning' the Nebraska Birdline. Josef Kren will now be
'in charge'. The e-mail address for sending messages is nebraskabirds@yahoo.com. Telephone with voice
mail is: 402-721-5486 (automated line), extension 6490 or 402-721-5480 (operator). He is working on
an 800 number. Josef will post further information on NEBirds.
NOU has recently received a large donation of very fine bird books. All of the members of the NOU
Library Committee are very busy at this time with other pursuits. A big thanks to Linda Brown and
Janis Paseka for volunteering to help catalog these books. But--the Library Committee could
use a few more volunteers. The work involves data entry of items such as author, publisher, date,
etc. using FileMakerPro database software. No computer experience is needed, but attention to detail
is very important. The NOU Library is located in the research collections area (Nebraska Hall, 16th
and W St.) of the University of Nebraska State Museum on the UN-L city campus in Lincoln. Large
blocks of time are not necessary, but the volunteer must be able to work during regular Nebraska
Hall hours, approximately 7:30 am to 4:30 pm Monday through Friday. Anyone interested please
contact Thomas Labedz at 402-472-8366 or e-mail at tlabedz1(at)unl. e d u.
If you will be having a change of address, please notify Treasurer Betty Grenon. It costs us every
time the post office has to send us a change of address. For heavier items such as the "Nebraska
Bird Review" this can be several dollars per piece of mail. Thank you.
Have you seen a really unusual bird in your area--a species that is really out of geographical range
or out of the normal season? If so, the NOU Records Committee would like to hear from you. Your
report can be written, a photograph, or even a recording of a 'diagnostic' voice. All reports should
include date, time, and place of sighting as well as a description of plumage characteristics and
behavior of the bird. Reports are to be sent to committee chair Mark Brogie. If you don't know whether
the species should be reported, make your notes and then check with Mark. Documentations may not seem
important to you today, but researchers in the future may want to know just exactly why you made the
identification you did. I have served on the Records Committee a couple of different times, and it is
quite a challenging activity!! I have also submitted a number of different documentations--not all
have been accepted. Whether a report is accepted or not, it is always a learning experience to submit
one--makes one a better observer besides.
