NOU 2009 Spring Meeting, York, May 15 through May 17

Hello everyone,

Please mark your calendar for the spring meeting of the Nebraska Ornithologists' Union. The group will gather May 15-17 in York for field trips, speakers, and updates on NOU business. Everyone is welcome to attend, members and non-members.

There will be two speakers for the weekend.  Saturday evening, Tim Gallagher, author of The Grail Bird:  The Rediscovery of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker, will give updates on work surrounding the rediscovery of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker (more information on the book and the author follows in the next artical).  Friday night, Ornithologist Dan Kim of the Platte River Whooping Crane Maintenance Trust will present information on grassland birds and how the management of grasslands and Brown-headed Cowbird parasitism affect these species.

Field trips on Saturday and Sunday morning will focus on the bird migration in the Rainwater Basin.  This large area of wetlands and lakes hosts an astounding variety of birds in the spring.  Imagine being with some of the best birders in the state and being able to see such species as Buff-breasted Sandpiper, White-faced Ibis, Black-crowned Night-Heron, American Golden-Plover, Ruddy Turnstone, Peregrine Falcon, and many more.  Don't miss this chance to experience one of the premier birding areas in the nation.

More information about the Spring meeting will be in the upcoming newsletter including information about registration costs along with a registration form, schedule for the weekend, and information on hotel and
motel accommodations.  The next newsletter should be on its way in early April.

These two articles were taken from a news release written by Kevin Poague
and edited to fit with this newsletter.

IVORY-BILLED WOODPECKER TALK

Hot on the Trail of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker

Living Bird magazine editor Tim Gallagher had been traveling across the
South, interviewing people who claimed to have seen Ivory-billed
Woodpeckers and following up on their sightings. Who could have
predicted that on one of these trips down a remote bayou in eastern
Arkansas, he and his colleague Bobby Harrison would have a close-up,
unmistakable view of this most sought after of birds? This sighting--the
first time since 1944 that two qualified observers had positively
identified an ivory-billed woodpecker in the United States--quickly led
to the largest search ever launched to find a rare bird and ultimately
to the announcement on April 28, 2005, of the rediscovery of the
species. Tim will tell the story of the ivory-bill's near demise and
miraculous resurrection and discuss The Grail Bird, his new book on the
rediscovery.

Tim Gallagher is an award-winning author, wildlife photographer, and
magazine editor. He is currently editor-in-chief of Living Bird, the
flagship publication of the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology. Tim's
lifelong interest in wilderness exploration has taken him twice to
Greenland, where he made an open-boat voyage up the coast to study
nesting seabirds and falcons, and to the hinterlands of Iceland, where
he climbed lofty cliffs to learn more about the spectacular gyrfalcon,
the world's largest falcon. He is the author of The Grail Bird, Wild
Bird Photography, Parts Unknown, and, most recently, Falcon Fever, about
his lifelong fascination with birds of prey.
