At the entrance to the Bolin Trail, a sign explains the importance of this area to sandhill cranes.
Native Prairie/Wet Meadow
This pasture is both a native prairie and a wet meadow. Native prairie
means it's primarily composed of native grasses and flowering plants (forbs),
largely gone from the Platte River valley. Wet meadow means the
groundwater is at or near the surface. In the spring much of this meadow
floods, encouraging the presence of invertebrates and forbs which provide
essential nutrients for sandhill cranes during their spring migration.
