Welcome to an update of the Nebraska Birdline, sponsored by the Audubon
Society of Omaha, for Tuesday, December 21st.

In central Nebraska on the 17th in Harlan County, at least 83 species
were tallied on the Christmas Bird Count. Highlights were a COMMON LOON,
5 WESTERN GREBES, a GREATER SCAUP, a GOLDEN EAGLE, a FERRUGINOUS HAWK, a
BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE, a CALIFORNIA GULL, a THAYER'S GULL, 3 CAROLINA
WRENS, a WINTER WREN, a BROWN THRASHER, and FOX SPARROW. On the 19th in
the Alma south sewage pond, a GREATER SCAUP and a WHITE-WINGED SCOTER were found.

In Buffalo County on the 18th, 57 species were seen on the Kearney CBC.
Highlights were 7 BALD EAGLES, 3 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, a MERLIN, a PRAIRIE
FALCON, 2 CAROLINA WRENS, a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, 3 LAPLAND LONGSPURS,
a BREWER'S BLACKBIRD and 6 PINE SISKINS. In Hall County on the 18th, 65
species were seen on the Grand Island CBC including 4 GREAT BLUE HERONS,
a PRAIRIE FALCON, 4 SHORT-EARED OWLS, 3 NORTHERN SHRIKES, 3 LOGGERHEAD
SHRIKES, and 2 PURPLE FINCHES.

In eastern Nebraska on the 17th, at least 82 species were counted on the
Branched Oak Lake CBC. Highlights include: DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT,
ROSS'S GOOSE, GREATER SCAUP, MERLIN, AMERICAN COOT, 5 RED-HEADED
WOODPECKERS, CAROLINA WREN, WINTER WREN, FOX SPARROW and SNOW BUNTING. On
the 18th, a female AMERICAN BLACK DUCK was seen at the bird feeding
garden at Chet Ager nature center in Lincoln.

On the 18th, 74 species were seen on the Omaha CBC. Highlights include:
11 TUNDRA SWANS seen at Lake Manawa; a FOX SPARROW and a BREWER'S BLACKBIRD
south of Lake Manawa in Iowa; a PILEATED WOODPECKER in Fontenelle Forest
and a COMMON REDPOLL in Fontenelle Hills housing area in Bellevue; a
SMITH'S LONGSPUR at Bucaneer Bay in Cass County.

The DeSoto NWR CBC on the 19th tallied at least 64 species. Highlights
include: 4 TRUMPETER SWANS at Boyer Chute in Washington County; a
LONG-EARED OWL at Cunningham Lake north of Omaha; a WINTER WREN and a BROWN
THRASHER at Neale Woods; 9 SWAMP SPARROWS at Nathan's Lake north of Neale Woods.

In Iowa on the 20th south of Council Bluffs, a mixed flock of over 100
LAPLAND LONGSPURS and HORNED LARKS was seen along Highway 370 east of the
Bellevue bridge.
