Welcome to an update of the Nebraska Birdline, sponsored by the Audubon
Society of Omaha, for Thursday, October 5th.
In western Nebraska on the 30th in Keith County, the immature white-phase
REDDISH EGRET was seen again at the west end of Lake McConaughy. A
COMMON TERN was also spotted at Lake McConaughy on the 30th. In Kimball
County on the 1st, a RED-NAPED SAPSUCKER was found at Oliver Reservoir
inside the east entrance to the dam in the tall trees. In Scotts Bluff
County on the 30th, about 100 WESTERN GREBES, a CLARK' S GREBE and a ROCK
WREN were found at Lake Minatare. Also on the 30th, 3 BURROWING OWLS
were found east of Scottsbluff.
In eastern Nebraska in Cedar County on the 1st and 2nd, 2 SABINE'S GULLS
were seen in the tailwaters at Gavin's Point Dam. In Dixon County on the
1st, a PEREGRINE FALCON and 2 SWAINSON'S HAWKS were found 5 miles north of
Logan Creek bridge northwest of Wakefield. In Dodge County on the 2nd,
18 SWAINSON'S HAWKS were seen in a field southwest of Hooper.
In Douglas County on the 3rd at Cunningham Lake north of Omaha 4 GREAT
EGRETS, 13 GREAT BLUE HERONS and 15 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS were found. On
the 1st at Neale Woods Nature Center, a female BLACK-THROATED BLUE
WARBLER was seen at the pond. In Washington County on the 1st, a WINTER
WREN was seen on the Missouri River Ecology Trail at Neale Woods.
In Lancaster County on the 1st at Holmes Lake in Lincoln, a PEREGRINE
FALCON, 4 SEDGE WRENS, 3 CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS, 2 LINCOLN'S SPARROWS and a
PINE SISKIN were seen and on the 30th, a RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH and a SPOTTED
TOWHEE were found there. At Branched Oak Lake on the 1st, an OSPREY, 14
AMERICAN AVOCETS, STILT SANDPIPERS and LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS were seen.
In Saunders County on the 29th, 298 KILLDEERS, 44 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, 2
STILT SANDPIPERS and a BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER were seen at Memphis Lakes SRA.
In the eastern Rainwater Basin on the 1st, 3 GREAT EGRETS, 3 CATTLE
EGRETS, 26 WHITE-FACED/plegadis IBIS, a MERLIN and 10 species of
shorebirds including 90 STILT SANDPIPERS, 88 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS and a
RED-NECKED PHALAROPE were seen. In Clay County on the 1st, a BARN OWL
was found at Lange WPA.
In central Nebraska in Phelps County at Funk Lagoon on the 1st, 3 EARED
GREBES, an AMERICAN BITTERN, a GREAT EGRET, 5 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS,
4 WHITE-FACED IBIS, a COOPER'S HAWK and about 1,000 BARN SWALLOWS were seen.
In Loup County on September 29th the following species were found at
Calamus Reservoir: 103 WESTERN GREBES, 900 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS, 3,200
DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS, a GREAT EGRET, 14 CATTLE EGRETS, an OSPREY, 4
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, 2 AMERICAN AVOCETS, 37 SANDERLINGS, 2
BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS and a BELL'S VIREO. On the 30th, a MERLIN was
seen near Calamus and a SAY'S PHOEBE was seen at Calamus Reservoir. In
Sherman County on the 29th, 4 SANDERLINGS were seen at Sherman Reservoir
and a PRAIRIE FALCON was spotted 1.2 miles northwest of the reservoir.
In Harlan County on the 29th, 22 GREAT EGRETS and 11 AMERICAN
GOLDEN-PLOVERS were seen at Harlan Reservoir.
In Iowa south of Council Bluffs on the 5th, 3 WESTERN GREBES, about 5,000
FRANKLIN'S GULLS and 5 BONAPARTE'S GULLS were seen at Lake Manawa.
