Welcome to an update of the Nebraska Birdline, sponsored by the Audubon
Society of Omaha, for Wednesday, January 5th.

In western Nebraska on the 2nd, 101 species were tallied on the Lake
McConaughy CBC. Highlights include: 2 COMMON LOONS, 2 RED-NECKED
GREBES, 11 CLARK'S GREBES, 352 WESTERN GREBES, a DOUBLE-CRESTED
CORMORANT, a TUFTED DUCK, a BLACK SCOTER, a SURF SCOTER, 6 OLDSQUAWS, 3
BARROW'S GOLDENEYES, 4 VIRGINIA RAILS, 5 COMMON SNIPES, 3 MARSH WRENS, 3
WINTER WRENS, a HERMIT THRUSH, a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD, a BROWN THRASHER,
2 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, a LINCOLN'S SPARROW, a PURPLE FINCH and 2
RED-CROSSBILLS.

In Sioux County on the 3rd, a GOLDEN EAGLE and 15 GRAY-CROWNED ROSY-FINCHES
were seen on the Henry Road, 18 miles north of Henry. Also on the 3rd, a
GOLDEN EAGLE was seen in Sowbelly Canyon. In Dawes County on the 3rd, a
flock of PINYON JAYS was spotted south of Crawford.

In Lincoln County on the 4th, 4 immature TRUMPETER SWANS were seen on the
lake in Cottonwood Canyon. On the 2nd, 200 MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRDS, 15
EASTERN BLUEBIRDS and 6 MOURNING DOVES were found in Cottonwood and Box Elder Canyons.

In Morrill County on the 4th, a BLACK SWAN, a probable escapee, was
reported south of Bridgeport on the North Platte River.

In Perkins County on the 1st, 4 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, 2 MERLINS, 2 PRAIRIE
FALCONS, about 3500 HORNED LARKS and 1500 LAPLAND LONGSPURS were found.

In central Nebraska in Harlan County on the 1st, a male DICKCISSEL and 15
RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were seen at Harlan Reservoir.

In eastern Nebraska in Cedar County on the 1st, about 20 BALD EAGLES and 50
BONAPARTE'S GULLS were found at Gavin's Point Dam. In Dixon County on
the 1st, 2 SHORT-EARED OWLS were seen hunting along the road northwest of Wakefield.

In Cass County on the 31st, 7 BALD EAGLES, 2 COOTS and a HERRING GULL were
found at Louisville Lakes SRA.

In Iowa on the 5th, a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was seen again at a backyard
birdbath in Glenwood. For information call June Parks at 712-527-3406.
On the 31st of December a HOODED MERGANSER, 2 RUDDY DUCKS and 2 adult BALD
EAGLES were spotted at the Mid-American ponds south of Council Bluffs.
