Welcome to an update of the Nebraska Birdline, sponsored by the Audubon
Society of Omaha, for Monday, March 20th.
In central Nebraska in Hall County, the COMMON CRANE was seen on Denman
Rd. on the evening of the 18th. On the 19th, the COMMON CRANE family was
seen flying over Denman Rd. and was found about a mile south along the
Platte River Drive. To find the location where the bird has been most
often seen, take the Wood River I-80 Exit 300 and cross the Platte River.
The birds are usually found in a field on the north side of the road
about 7/10 of a mile west of the intersection of Denman Rd. and Highway 11.
Denman Rd. is the first road south of the river. If you see the COMMON
CRANE, please notify the Nebraska Birdline at 402 292-5325 or by e-mail
at lpdlfrd@juno.com. On the 20th, a WHOOPING CRANE was spotted 4 miles
west of Doniphan on the Platte River Drive.
In Harlan County on the 19th, 15 species of waterfowl and an OSPREY were
seen at Harlan Reservoir.
In the east in Dodge County on the 18th, a pair of TRUMPETER SWANS was
found at Loup Park north of Columbus.
In Saunders County on the 19th, a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was seen just east
of Red Cedar Lake.
In Clay County on the 19th, 340 ROSS'S GEESE were seen at Hansen WPA. At
Kissinger WMA on the 19th, a GREATER YELLOWLEGS was seen. A ROUGH-LEGGED
HAWK was found at Sandpiper WPA, also on the 19th.
In Douglas County on the 19th, an AMERICAN AVOCET was seen on the north
end of Cunningham Lake north of Highway 36. On the 18th, 2 RED-BREASTED
MERGANSERS were seen at Cunningham Lake. In Sarpy County on the 20th in
Fontenelle Forest, a YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER and a FOX SPARROW were seen on
the Great Marsh.
