Welcome to an update of the Nebraska Birdline, sponsored by the Audubon
Society of Omaha, for Monday, May 8th.
In western Nebraska on the 6th in Scotts Bluff County, a male BLUE-WINGED
WARBLER, a PRAIRIE WARBLER and 5 LAZULI BUNTINGS were found in Carter
Canyon. Also on the 6th, a GRAY PARTRIDGE and a GOLDEN EAGLE were spotted
in Rifle Sight Canyon. On the 6th at Kiowa WMA, 20 CINNAMON TEAL and a
WESTERN SANDPIPER were seen.
In Kimball County on the 6th, a CALIFORNIA GULL was found at Oliver
Reservoir. Also in Kimball County on the 6th, 2 CASSIN'S KINGBIRDS and 2
NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRDS were seen.
In eastern Nebraska in Douglas County on the 8th at Towle Park in Omaha a
GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH and a MOURNING WARBLER were seen and on the 7th, a
BLUE-WINGED WARBLER was found there. In Sarpy County in Bellevue on the
8th in Fontenelle Forest, a PILEATED WOODPECKER was seen on Sycamore
Trail north of the parking lot. Also seen in Fontenelle on the 8th were
a YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO and 5 PROTHONOTARY WARBLERS. On the 7th, 2 LITTLE
BLUE HERONS, 5 SWAINSON'S THRUSHES, 2 BLACKPOLL WARBLERS and an INDIGO
BUNTING were seen in Fontenelle Forest. On the 8th, a GOLDEN-WINGED
WARBLER was seen at Chalco Hills Recreation Area. On the 7th, a MOURNING
WARBLER was seen in a Papillion yard. Also on the 7th, a KENTUCKY
WARBLER was found at Schramm State Park. In Washington County on the 7th
at Boyer Chute NWR, an EASTERN KINGBIRD and a ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK were found.
In Dodge County on the 5th, 11 BOBOLINKS and DICKCISSELS were spotted 7
miles northwest of Ames. On the 7th in Fremont, WOOD THRUSHES and a
PROTHONOTARY WARBLER were seen at Hormel Park.
In the eastern Rainwater Basin on the 6th and 7th 22 species of shorebirds
were found including: 2 SNOWY PLOVERS, 3 RUDDY TURNSTONES, 839
WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS and 16 DUNLIN. Seen on the 6th in Clay County were
a GLOSSY IBIS at McMurtrey Refuge, (not accessible to the public) and a
first year LITTLE GULL at Massie WPA. The LITTLE GULL was present for
about 10 minutes with a flock of FRANKLIN'S GULLS.
In central Nebraska in Phelps County on the 6th at Funk Lagoon the
following species were seen: 11 EARED GREBES, 3 GREAT EGRETS, 2 GREATER
SCAUP, 7 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, a BLACK-NECKED STILT, an UPLAND
SANDPIPER, 40 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, a WESTERN SANDPIPER, 11 LEAST
SANDPIPERS, 5 BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS, 30 STILT SANDPIPERS, 30 LONG-BILLED
DOWITCHERS, 95 WILSON'S PHALAROPES, a MARSH WREN and 40 GREAT-TAILED
GRACKLES. On the 7th, a PIPING PLOVER and 8 WHITE-FACED IBIS were seen at
Funk Lagoon and on the 4th, 2 WHIMBRELS were seen there. In Kearney County
on the 6th, 2 LARK SPARROWS were seen 2 miles east of Axtell, and 2
GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS were spotted 7 miles northeast of Minden.
In Harlan County on the 6th, a BLUE GROSBEAK, an ORCHARD ORIOLE and a
DICKCISSEL were found southwest of Alma. Also on the 6th south of
Huntley, a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was found.
In Iowa on the 7th south of Council Bluffs, a PIPING PLOVER, 7 AMERICAN
AVOCETS and a FORSTER'S TERN were found at the Mid-American south pond. On
the 8th, a RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, 31 FRANKLIN'S GULLS, 6 BLACK TERNS and
16 FORSTER'S TERNS were found there. On the 8th, YELLOW-HEADED
BLACKBIRDS were seen east of Boy Scout Island at Lake Manawa. On the 8th
at the Black Squirrel Marsh on the north side of Highway 92, a PEREGRINE
FALCON and 12 species of shorebirds including STILT SANDPIPERS and
WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS were seen.
