Welcome to an update of the Nebraska Birdline, sponsored by the Audubon
Society of Omaha, for Tuesday, April 10th.
In eastern Nebraska in Douglas County on the 6th in Omaha, a WILD TURKEY
was seen in a yard near 87th and Cass Streets. On the 7th, 2 COMMON LOONS
and 2 HORNED GREBES were seen at Zorinsky Lake. In Sarpy County on the 8th
in Bellevue, 12 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK and a PEREGRINE
FALCON were seen flying over the Fontenelle Forest Nature Center. Also
on the 8th in Fontenelle Forest, a PILEATED WOODPECKER, RUBY-CROWNED
KINGLETS and FOX SPARROWS were found on trails north of Gifford Road and an
OSPREY and 3 SWAINSON'S HAWKS were seen flying overhead. On the 8th at
Chalco Hills, 4 BONAPARTE'S GULLS, an EASTERN PHOEBE, 6 EASTERN
BLUEBIRDS, 5 FOX SPARROWS and 13 HARRIS'S SPARROWS were found.
In Lancaster County on the 5th, 3 COMMON LOONS, a pair of HOODED
MERGANSERS and 27 FRANKLIN'S GULLS were found at Branched Oak Lake. On the
9th, VESPER, SAVANNAH and FIELD SPARROWS were seen at Spring Creek Prairie
south of Denton. In Lincoln on the 7th, a COMMON LOON, a HORNED GREBE and
a GREATER SCAUP were found at Holmes Lake. In Cass County on the 9th, an
AMERICAN WOODCOCK was found on a pond southwest of Elmwood. On the 5th,
55 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS were seen at Beaver Lake.
In the eastern Rainwater Basin on the 7th and 8th, 4 SWAINSON'S HAWKS, a
MERLIN, 3 PEREGRINE FALCONS and 20 BREWER'S BLACKBIRDS were found. Nine
species of shorebirds were seen in the eastern Rainwater Basin over the
week-end including: 53 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS, 260 GREATER YELLOWLEGS,
128 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 2 MARBLED GODWITS, 93 BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS, 11
PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, 5 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS and a COMMON SNIPE.
In southern Clay County, 63 SANDHILL CRANES and 65 GREAT-TAILED GRACKLES
were found. In Fillmore County, 3 PURPLE MARTINS were seen in Geneva.
In central Nebraska in Hall County on the 8th, a CATTLE EGRET and 3 VESPER
SPARROWS were seen on the trail at Crane Meadow Nature Center at the I-80
Alda exit. In Kearney County on the 8th, a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was spotted
6 miles south of the Platte River. Also on the 8th, 8 BREWER'S
BLACKBIRDS were seen a mile east of Axtell. In Phelps County on the 8th,
5 HORNED GREBES, 8 EARED GREBES, 2 BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS, 2 PECTORAL
SANDPIPERS, 2 COMMON SNIPES and a VESPER SPARROW were found at Funk Lagoon.
In Harlan County on the 8th at Harlan Reservoir, a COMMON LOON and 2
CINNAMON TEAL were seen. On the 8th in Alma, a GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKEN,
3 PURPLE MARTINS, 8 YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS and 2 GREAT-TAILED GRACKLES
were seen. On the 7th, an OSPREY was seen in Alma and 2 LOGGERHEAD
SHRIKES were found south of there.
In western Nebraska in Scotts Bluff County on the 8th, 2 EURASIAN
COLLARED-DOVES were spotted in Mitchell. Another EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE
was seen in Minatare and a 4th was seen between Minatare and Scottsbluff.
In Iowa south of Sioux City on the 7th, 204 SANDHILL CRANES were seen
near Snyder's Bend and 2 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 7 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, a
PECTORAL SANDPIPER, 2 BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS, a LEAST SANDPIPER and a DUNLIN
were found at Snyder's Bend. South of Council Bluffs on the 8th, a
HORNED GREBE, a ROSS'S GOOSE, an AMERICAN BLACK DUCK and 4 BAIRD'S
SANDPIPERS were seen at the MidAmerican south pond. Also on the 8th, a
CINNAMON TEAL was seen in a pond east of Percival.
