Welcome to an update of the Nebraska Birdline, sponsored by the Audubon
Society of Omaha, for Tuesday, April 17th.
In eastern Nebraska in Knox County on the 16th, a CLARK'S GREBE, 3
WESTERN GREBES, 23 GREAT EGRETS and 6 AMERICAN AVOCETS were seen at the
Niobrara Marsh. On the 14th, an AMERICAN BITTERN and 2 BLACK-CROWNED
NIGHT-HERONS were seen there. Also on the 14th, 4 AMERICAN WOODCOCKS
were found 3 miles south of Niobrara. On the 14th the following species
were found: 3 HUDSONIAN GODWITS, 6 MARBLED GODWITS (1 mile north of
Winnetoon), 12 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS (7 miles west of Winnetoon) and
SHARP-TAILED GROUSE and GREATER PRAIRIE- CHICKENS (on a lek 2 miles west of
Winnetoon).
In Sarpy County on the 14th in Bellevue in Fontenelle Forest, an OSPREY,
a SWAINSON'S HAWK, a WINTER WREN, a NORTHERN PARULA, 2 YELLOW-THROATED
WARBLERS, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, a LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH, a FIELD
SPARROW and a FOX SPARROW were seen. On the 14th, a PALM WARBLER was seen
at Wehrspann Lake. On the 12th, a HORNED GREBE and 2 GREATER YELLOWLEGS
were found at Walnut Creek west of Papillion. In Douglas County on the
12th, 2 GREAT EGRETS were seen at Heron Haven preserve at 117th and Maple
in Omaha.
In Otoe County on the 15th in Nebraska City, a HOUSE WREN was found at
Arbor Lodge State Park.
In the eastern Rainwater Basin from the 13th- 15th, thirteen species of
shorebirds were seen including: 2 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS, 2 SEMIPALMATED
PLOVERS, 10 AMERICAN AVOCETS, 68 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 95 LESSER
YELLOWLEGS, 9 MARBLED GODWITS, 4 HUDSONIAN GODWITS, 71 BAIRD'S
SANDPIPERS, 4 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS and 9 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS. Other
species seen in the Rainwater Basin were: 2 GREAT EGRETS, a SNOWY EGRET,
12 CATTLE EGRETS, 4 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS, 3 CINNAMON TEAL (York and
Fillmore Counties), 65 SWAINSON'S HAWKS and 1,000 BREWER'S BLACKBIRDS.
In central Nebraska in Harlan County on the 15th, a GREAT EGRET, 2 LESSER
YELLOWLEGS, a WILLET, 55 MARBLED GODWITS and 6 FORSTER'S TERNS were seen
from the bridge on Highway 83 south of Alma. Also on the 15th, an EARED
GREBE was spotted at the Orleans sewage pond.
In Phelps County on the 15th at Funk Lagoon, a SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, 2
WILLETS, a WHITE- RUMPED SANDPIPER and 26 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS were found.
In western Nebraska in Scotts Bluff County on the 12th, a WESTERN GREBE,
16 SNOW GEESE, 3 CINNAMON TEAL, 5 AMERICAN AVOCETS, 5 GREAT-TAILED
GRACKLES and a YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD were seen at Kiowa WMA south of
Morrill. In Sheridan County on the 11th, a LONG-BILLED CURLEW was seen
east of Hay Springs.
In Keith County on the 14th at Lake McConaughy, 336 ROSS'S GEESE, a
SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, 3 PIPING PLOVERS, 32 AMERICAN AVOCETS, 2 MARBLED
GODWITS and a FORSTER'S TERN were seen. Also on the 14th, the following
species were found at lake Ogallala: 8 WHITE-FACED IBIS, 18 GREATER
SCAUP, 10 AMERICAN AVOCETS, 3 WILLETS and an adult THAYER'S GULL.
In Kimball County on the 14th, 12 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS and 5 MOUNTAIN PLOVERS
were seen. Also on the 14th, a PEREGRINE FALCON, 2 AMERICAN AVOCETS, a
EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE and a GREAT-TAILED GRACKLE were found at Oliver Reservoir.
