Welcome to an update of the Nebraska Birdline, sponsored by the Audubon
Society of Omaha, for Monday, April 23rd.
In eastern Nebraska in Sarpy County on the 21st, an OSPREY, a PILEATED
WOODPECKER, a WARBLING VIREO, 4 NORTHERN PARULAS and a YELLOW-THROATED
WARBLER were found in the flood plain in Bellevue at Fontenelle Forest.
On the 20th, a BALTIMORE ORIOLE was spotted in the Forest. A PILEATED
WOODPECKER was seen on the 20th near Logan Fontenelle Camp Bldg. and
another was seen south of the Wetlands Center. On the 21st south of
Bellevue, 2 FORSTER'S TERNS were seen at Offutt Lake. On the 22nd at
Chalco Hills Recreation Area, a BLUE GRAY GNATCATCHER was seen and on the
19th, 2 COOPER'S HAWKS and 2 FIELD SPARROWS were found there. In Douglas
County on the 22nd, 2 EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVES were seen on 114th Street
between Gold and Arbor Streets in Omaha. Also on the 22nd, 5 YELLOW-RUMPED
WARBLERS, 2 ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS and 3 PINE SISKINS were seen by the
Spring Grotto in Elmwood Park. On the 20th, a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was
seen in Omaha near Rockbrook Village along Interstate 680.
In Lancaster County on the 19th, a SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER was spotted
on the MoPac Bike Trail between Lincoln and Walton. At Spring Creek
Prairie south of Denton on the 19th, 9 WILLETS, an UPLAND SANDPIPER and a
GRASSHOPPER SPARROW were found. Also on the 19th, 2 OSPREYS, 4 FORSTER'S
TERNS and a LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE were seen at Branched Oak Lake.
In Dixon County on the 20th, 13 AMERICAN PIPITS were found on a farm pond
3 miles north and 3/4 mile east of Wakefield. In Dakota County on the
21st, a pair of HOODED MERGANSERS were found south of South Sioux City.
In the eastern Rainwater Basin from the 20th-22nd, eighteen species of
shorebirds were seen including: 118 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS, 9
SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 7 PIPING PLOVERS, 21 AMERICAN AVOCETS, 15 GREATER
YELLOWLEGS, 259 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, a SOLITARY SANDPIPER, 74 WILLETS, 4
HUDSONIAN GODWITS, 171 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, 284 BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS,
42 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, a DUNLIN, 3 STILT SANDPIPERS, 196 LONG- BILLED
DOWITCHERS and 779 WILSON'S PHALAROPES. In Fillmore County, a
SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER was spotted 1 mile west of Krause WPA. Other
species seen in the Rainwater Basin were: 11 GREAT EGRETS, 12 CATTLE
EGRETS, 20 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS, 14 WHITE- FACED IBIS, a CINNAMON
TEAL (Wilkins WPA, Fillmore Co.), a MERLIN and a PEREGRINE FALCON (Wilkins WPA.)
In central Nebraska in Harlan County on the 20th, an OSPREY, 9 WILLETS,
14 MARBLED GODWITS, 3 LEAST SANDPIPERS and 60 YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS were
seen east of Highway 183 bridge south of Alma. On the 19th, an AMERICAN
AVOCET and LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS were seen there.
In Kearney County on the 22nd at Prairie Dog Marsh, 34 EARED GREBES, a
SORA, a SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, a PIPING PLOVER, 2 SANDERLINGS, a LEAST
SANDPIPER and about 100 WILSON'S PHALAROPES were seen. In Phelps County on
the 22nd, 4 WILLETS, a SWAINSON'S THRUSH and 2 SPOTTED TOWHEES were found
at Sacramento-Wilcox WMA. In Buffalo County on the 17th at Kearney Lake,
a PIPING PLOVER, 3 MARBLED GODWITS, 15 BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS, a LEAST
SANDPIPER and 2 PURPLE MARTINS were seen. Also on the 17th, a PINE SISKIN
was found on the UNK campus. On the 17th, 2 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS and 3
GREAT-TAILED GRACKLES were seen 3.5 miles SE of Gibbon.
In western Nebraska in Scotts Bluff County on the 18th, 2 SAY'S PHOEBES and
an EASTERN BLUEBIRD were found in the Wildcat Hills south of Gering. In
Dawes County on the 20th, a PYGMY NUTHATCH was seen at a feeder in Chadron.
