Welcome to an update of the Nebraska Birdline, sponsored by the Audubon
Society of Omaha, for Tuesday, December 25th.
In eastern Nebraska on the 22nd in Knox County, a SNOWY OWL was seen at
the Niobrara Marsh. Take the road north from the Niobrara High School to
the river and take river road east for approx. 3/4 of a mile. Also on the
22nd, 3 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS were found on the Missouri River just
north of Niobrara.
In Sarpy County on the 25th south of Bellevue, 12 LAPLAND LONGSPURS were
found with a flock of 20 HORNED LARKS in fields between the Base Lake and
the Papio Creek. On the 24th, a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER was seen in the
Birdline backyard in Bellevue.
The DeSoto NWR CBC in Washington County on the 22nd tallied 61 species
including: AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT, ROSS'S
GOOSE, HOODED MERGANSER, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, MERLIN, COMMON SNIPE,
SHORT-EARED OWL, YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, NORTHERN SHRIKE, YELLOW-RUMPED
WARBLER and LAPLAND LONGSPURS.
The Branched Oak Lake CBC in Lancaster and Seward Counties tallied 73
species on the 16th. Highlights include AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN,
PEREGRINE FALCON, SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, PECTORAL SANDPIPER, HERMIT
THRUSH and RED CROSSBILL.
In central Nebraska in Harlan County on the 15th, the CBC tallied 60
species. Highlights were: a BONAPARTE'S GULL, a THAYER'S GULL, a
RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, 17 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS and a RED CROSSBILL.
