Welcome to an update of the Nebraska Birdline, sponsored by the Audubon
Society of Omaha, for Wednesday, January 10th.
In western Nebraska in Sioux County on the 6th, a GOLDEN EAGLE, 2 BLACK
ROSY-FINCHES and over a hundred GRAY-CROWNED ROSY-FINCHES were seen at Wind
Springs Ranch. In Scotts Bluff County on the 6th, a TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE
was found at the Gering Rest Home. Also on the 6th, several PYGMY
NUTHATCHES were seen at the Wildcat Hills Nature Center feeders.
In Keith County on the 6th, a PRAIRIE FALCON was spotted below the
Keystone diversion dam. On the 7th at Lake Ogallala, a male BARROW'S
GOLDENEYE, a hybrid GOLDENEYE/HOODED MERGANSER and an adult GLAUCOUS GULL
were seen.
In central Nebraska on the 7th in Gosper County, 2 RED-BREASTED
MERGANSERS, 124 BALD EAGLES and a NORTHERN HARRIER were seen at Johnson
Lake.
In Dawson County on the 7th south of Lexington, 6 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 2
NORTHERN PINTAILS, an AMERICAN WIGEON and a SHARP-SHINNED HAWK were found.
A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was also spotted in Dawson County.
In northwestern Phelps County on the 7th, 2 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, 350
HORNED LARKS, 8 CEDAR WAXWINGS and 250 RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS were found.
In Buffalo County on the 7th, a NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen a mile east of
the Gibbon I-80 Exit.
In eastern Nebraska in Sarpy County in Bellevue on the 9th at Fontenelle
Forest, a PILEATED WOODPECKER was spotted at 4 p.m. flying past the
Wetlands Learning Center on Gifford Rd.
The DeSoto/Boyer Chute NWR CBC on December 17th tallied 61 species.
Highlights were: 43 BALD EAGLES, 14 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, a MERLIN, 3
SHORT-EARED OWLS, 6 RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS, an EASTERN PHOEBE, 13
YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, a CHIPPING SPARROW, 23 WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS, a
FOX SPARROW, 2 LAPLAND LONGSPURS, 2 SNOW BUNTINGS, 2 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS and 2
PURPLE FINCHES.
