Welcome to an update of the Nebraska Birdline, sponsored by the Audubon
Society of Omaha, for Tuesday, Aug. 13th.
In eastern Nebraska in Sarpy County on the 13th south of Bellevue, 12
species of shorebirds were seen in sod farms south of Offutt Air Force
Base. In the east-most farm on Missouri River Road, a BLACK- BELLIED
PLOVER and 20 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS were found, and 4 BUFF-BREASTED
SANDPIPERS and 3 UPLAND SANDPIPERS were seen on the sod farm just east of
Offutt. On the 7th in Bellevue, an immature male RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD
visited the feeder in the Birdline yard. It was not seen after the 7th.
In Lancaster County on the 11th at Pawnee Lake, a juvenile LITTLE BLUE
HERON, an AMERICAN AVOCET and a BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER were found. On the
7th at Pawnee Lake a GREAT EGRET, about 150 BLACK TERNS and 8 species of
shorebirds were found, including 2 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS. At Branched
Oak Lake on the 11th, an EARED GREBE, a male COMMON MERGANSER, 63
FORSTER'S TERNS and many BLACK TERNS were seen.
In central Nebraska on the 6th in Harlan County, a BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER,
4 AMERICAN AVOCETS and 14 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS were found along the old
highway in Alma. On the 4th, 42 GREAT EGRETS, 5 SNOWY EGRETS, a LITTLE
BLUE HERON and a PEREGRINE FALCON were seen at Harlan Reservoir.
In Valley County on the 10th, a WESTERN GREBE, a SAY'S PHOEBE and a BLUE
GROSBEAK were seen at Davis Creek Reservoir. In the southeast corner of
the county, 2 SWAMP SPARROWS were heard.
In western Nebraska on the 12th in the Scotts Bluff County side of the
Wildcat Hills, an OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER, a RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH and a
family of BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERS were seen. On the 8th south of Morrill,
6 BLACK-CROWNED HERONS, 15 WHITE-FACED IBIS, 3 BLACK- NECKED STILTS and 3
AMERICAN AVOCETS were found. Also on the 8th, a total of 9 BURROWING
OWLS were seen east of Kiowa WMA.
