Welcome to an update of the Nebraska Birdline, sponsored by the Audubon
Society of Omaha, for Monday, Apr. 18th, 2003. The next Birdline update
will be on Friday, May 2nd.
In eastern Nebraska in Lancaster County on the 21st at the west end of
Pawnee Lake, a SNOWY EGRET, 12 GREAT EGRETS and 10 BLACK-CROWNED
NIGHT-HERONS were seen. In Seward County on the 21st, 72 SWAINSON'S
HAWKS were seen (some on the ground and some kettling) 1 mile west of
Seward along Highway 34.
In Richardson County on the 20th at Indian Cave State Park, 2 WINTER
WRENS, a HERMIT THRUSH, 5 BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERS, 5 NORTHERN PARULAS and 2
LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSHES were found.
In Pawnee County on the 20th, 3 GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKENS and a HENSLOW'S
SPARROW were seen at Burchard Lake.
In York County on the 18th, a SPRAGUE'S PIPIT was spotted on the west
side of Kirkpatrick Basin in the grassy parking area. On the 19th in
York, 2 RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES were found in the Greenwood Cemetery.
In Sarpy County on the 20th, a COMMON LOON was seen at Offutt Lake south
of Bellevue. Also on the 20th, a WHITE-FACED IBIS, a SEMIPALMATED
PLOVER, 24 LESSER YELLOWLEGS and 5 LEAST SANDPIPERS were spotted at the
pond on Missouri River Road east of Harlan Lewis Drive. On the 19thin
Bellevue, 15 RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS, a BANK SWALLOW, 2 HERMIT THRUSHES, 6
LINCOLN'S SPARROWS and 15 SWAMP SPARROWS were seen in Fontenelle Forest on
Marsh Trail. Also seen in Fontenelle on the 19th were YELLOW-THROATED
WARBLER, 3 NORTHERN PARULAS and 2 LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSHES. On the 21st, 7
GREAT EGRETS were found at Fontenelle Forest Great Marsh.
In Douglas County on the 21st, an OSPREY and several BROAD-WINGED HAWKS
were seen migrating over Elkhorn.
In Knox County on the 19th, 15 GREATER PRAIRIE CHICKENS and 2 SHARP-TAILED
GROUSE were found just west of Winnetoon. Also on the 19th, 2 GRAY
PARTRIDGES were found again 2 miles west and 3 miles north of Creighton.
In Dixon County on the 21st, 3 WILLETS and a MARBLED GODWIT were seen at
Fahrenholz Ponds.
In central Nebraska on the 19th in Sherman County, 20 EARED GREBES, a
SWAINSON'S HAWK, 430 FRANKLIN'S GULLS, 3 LOGGERHEAD SHRIKES and 10
YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS were seen at Sherman Reservoir.
In western Nebraska in Lincoln County on the 21st, 3 MARBLED GODWITS were
found at the North Platte Airport in a puddle near the entrance.
In Scotts Bluff County on the 18th, 4 WHITE-THROATED SWIFTS were seen at
Scottsbluff National Monument.
In Iowa south of Council Bluffs on the 20th, 22 HORNED GREBES, 2 SNOWY
EGRETS, an OSPREY and 4 WILLETS were seen at Lake Manawa.
