Welcome to an update of the Nebraska Birdline, sponsored by the Audubon
Society of Omaha, for Friday, July 25, 2003.

In eastern Nebraska in Washington County on the 20th, a LEAST BITTERN was
seen at Nathan's Lake.

In Clay County on the 24th, 17 GREAT EGRETS, 4 SNOWY EGRETS, a CATTLE
EGRET and a YELLOW- CROWNED NIGHT-HERON were seen at Moger WPA. On the
19th, a YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was spotted at Kissinger WPA.

In Fillmore County on the 18th, 7 species of shorebirds were found at
Sandpiper WMA including a SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER.

Also seen in the eastern Rainwater Basin on the 19th were the following
species: 3 WHITE-FACED IBIS, 7 HOODED MERGANSERS, a VIRGINIA RAIL, 16
SORAS, 13 species of shorebirds including 229 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 129
PECTORAL SANDPIPERS and a LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER.

In western Nebraska in Scotts Bluff County on the 20th, 8 COMMON
POORWILLS were seen on Old Stage Hill Road in Scottsbluff. On the 22nd,
3 RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRDS and a BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK were seen at feeders in
Mitchell. Also on the 22nd, 30 BURROWING OWLS were seen southeast of
Gering on Buffalo Creek Refuge Road.

On the 19th in Keith County the following species were found at Lake
McConaughy: 4 SNOWY PLOVERS, 77 PIPING PLOVERS, 2 LONG-BILLED
DOWITCHERS, 84 FRANKLIN'S GULLS, 84 CALIFORNIA GULLS and 11 LEAST TERNS.
On the 19th, a COMMON LOON was seen at Lake Ogallala.

In central Nebraska in Harlan County on the 19th, 67 GREAT EGRETS and 4
SNOWY EGRETS were seen at Harlan Reservoir.

In Custer County on the 19th, a LEAST TERN and a YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT were
found 1.5 miles north of Gates. On the 20th, 23 GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS and 4
BLUE GROSBEAKS were seen 4 miles north of Broken Bow.
